Getting Free

copyright 2000, Christine Fraser Ramsey

As far as I can tell,
Our lives will be recorded,
Our motives and our longings,
By excuses undistorted,
And laid out on a canvas,
Of choices, plans, and chances –
Opportunities and leanings,
Our full life circumstances.

And my role, as I can see it,
Is revealed in parts as needed.
To walk this path, with self intact,
To feed my soul, to free it.
To walk in joy, and give my gifts,
Wherever that might be.
To share my life with family, friends,
And rejoice in being free.

Chorus:

For getting free is a choice you make,
You make it every day,
And getting free is a chance you take,
So stand and seize the day.

I would be remiss if I were to say,
That I did this on my own.
As a matter of fact, I’ve had some help…
I haven’t walked alone.
A loving Friend’s watched over me,
And held me lest I would fall,
And a few good friends have lent a hand
To ease me through it all.

And my biggest job and the hardest task
Has been to "let it be" –
Whatever it is, the choices made,
By people close to me.
Those things that hurt, unkindly cut,
That took the heart from me,
And let it go, all of it go,
And rejoice in being free.

Chorus:

The grass still grows without my help,
This world’s not standing still.
Stars appear in the sky at night,
And love is still a thrill.
Though a lot has changed, that’s really true –
Old things fell, outcast….
Like dried up leaves that drop from trees
When the growing season’s past.

Chorus:
